Multi-Disciplinary: Modernism

Modernism:

Modernism is a philosophical movement that, along with cultural trends and changes arose from wide-scale and far-reaching transformations in the Western society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Modernism, in general includes the activities and creations of those who felt the traditional forms of art, architecture, literature, religious faith, philosophy, social organisation. Modernism is a mode of thinking -one or more philosophically defined characteristics, like self-consciousness or self reference that run across all the novelties in the arts and disciplines. 



Wassily Kandinsky



This painter is generally agreed to be the earliest abstract artist, he used colour an shape to evoke emotional response from viewer. The painting is also based on reality so not pure abstraction. Synaesthesia played a role in his work.



Paul Klee



This explores a range of mixed media techniques and produced abstract and semi-abstract piece. The piece is very experimental and the artist Paul wrote extensively about his art. He was a teacher at the Bauhaus and experimented with techniques of mono-printing onto varies surfaces. 




Anni Albers 



Anni was predominately a textile designer and used mainly geometric repeated shapes and she also focused on balance between shape, colour and tone. Her reaction is completely against complicated floral designs.
