James Russell Cant

James Russell Cant is a practising photography and a part time teacher for the BA and MA photography course at Norwich university. He's worked in photography for 18 years. His main focus is commercialising with many magazines and advertising agencies.
Recently he has focused much more on fine art and he believer that he spends more time now on research and contextual background approach to his work now.

Cant explained his interest in capturing the character of his models, and working with the personalities of each individual person. He said he wants to 'draw things out of them' and enjoys working with models to capture their true personality.

Cant described to us that he was never was very 'heavy handed' with the way he directs the person he's photographing. He allows the model some time and space to just become themselves. He also mentioned how he began to use 'happy accidents' more in his work. He found that the images he had produced might not of been what he thought was going to happen but they turned out better than what he had planned in most cases.

Majority of the talk was covering some of Cant's work he spoke about a lot of his experiences within the photography industry itself. Such as how the working technique could possibly change the equipment, whether being available or unavailable. This effects the work and the end result.

Overall I thought that he really made me think about the degree itself, he explained how fun it is and how much the course is. I really enjoy photography, but I'm not sure if a degree is right at the moment for me but I'd like to keep my options open and hopefully I will make the right decision.
